A Company formed in London in 1824, originally for the purpose of cultivating a million acres of land in New South Wales. In 1826 it was offered by the Home Government the Newcastle Colliery, then being run at a loss by the Colonial Government. After several years' negotiations, the Company accepted the colliery and a further grant of Newcastle land, thereby obtaining a virtual monoply of the Colony's coal trade. Gregson, 1837-1919, arrived in Australia 1856 where he became involved in the pastoral industry in N.S.W. and Queensland. In 1875 he joined the Australian Agricultural Company acting as General Superintendent until c. 1905 while also chairman of the Association of Northern Collieries. After retirement he lived at Mt.
